About Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Over ten years ago, LSU-New Orleans Emergency Medicine noted that our residency program was not as diverse as we wanted it to be. Our division leadership and Dr. Lisa Moreno decided to form the Section's first "Diversity Committee". She invited a group of faculty and resident BIPOC and allies who wanted to make a difference. We met for monthly dinners to create the strategy for increasing diversity that has resulted in the beautiful mosaic of races, ethnicities, faiths, gender identities, abilities, SES's, geographical differences, and prior training backgrounds that today is our awesomely diverse and inclusive residency program. Good enough is never enough for our Section, so the work of inclusion continues with leadership from Dr. Pierre Detiege, Associate Director of Diversity and Associate Program Director, and efforts by the many faculty and resident members of our committee. Our residency supports social justice efforts in the community, social determinants of health components in all didactic conferences, sessions on microaggressions, ally-ship, implicit bias, explicit bias, concordance and patient rights and safety, stress as a social determinant of health and race/ethnicity as a social determinant of stress. Bedside teaching always incorporates health literacy, cultural models of illness-wellness-death-difficult communications, concordance, and systems analysis. Respect for the individual is the hallmark of our teaching model, whether that individual is our patient, family, learner, colleague or teacher. Our program is a model for the medical school and the community regarding what not just diversity, but what genuine inclusion looks like!
