Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome to Louisiana State University’s Combined Residency Program in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics!

We are so excited to have the opportunity to share our unique program with you. The Combined Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics Residency Program at LSU is an exceptional program offering the enthusiastic a challenging yet rewarding training experience. The program, established in 2014, draws its strength and stability from the storied history of its two excellent parent programs – Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at LSU – New Orleans. This provides our residents with a strong foundation for a successful career in private practice or academic medicine, in general pediatrics, emergency medicine, or pediatric emergency medicine. Our program is unique and one of only four programs in the country.

Sincerely,
David Rayburn MD, MPH

Why Pursue a Combined Residency in EM-Peds?

Combined Specialty Programs are made up of two ACGME accredited programs at the same institution. Graduates from a combined EM-Peds residency are eligible to sit for both the Pediatric and Emergency Medicine boards and are also eligible to apply to ACGME accredited fellowships from either specialty. In 2025 the Combined EM-Peds program will be seeking individual ACGME accreditation. Traditionally, graduates of an EM-Peds combined residency practice some combination of general emergency medicine and pediatric emergency medicine. However, training in this program would prepare graduates to pursue a fellowship sponsored by either specialty, to practice a combination of emergency medicine and/or general pediatrics, or to work in the community emergency department serving as the dedicated “peds person.”

Curriculum

Our residents rotate between Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics every 6 months as an intern and every 3 months as an upper level. While rotating with pediatrics, the residents attend and participate in all pediatric didactic activities and scheduled continuity clinic. While rotating with emergency medicine, the residents attend all EM activities including weekly educational conferences and monthly EM journal clubs. Additionally there is a dedicated Peds EM journal club held hosted monthly at the home of one our faculty over great New Orleans food.  This protected time allows the residents a chance to get together once a month and enjoy each other’s company.  This event allows the residents to focus academically on Peds EM topics.  Additionally, they participate in a board review (covering selected EM and Peds topics) and hold a residency forum.

Applying to the Program

All interviews this season (2024-2025) will be held virtually. Applications will be reviewed beginning October. Interviews will be held from November to January. All applications must be submitted through ERAS. Given that there are only four programs in the country, with a total of 9 spots, we expect that you will also have a back-up - traditionally Emergency Medicine or Pediatrics. If you would also like to be considered for one of these categorical programs at LSU, you must also submit a separate application to that categorical program through ERAS.

The following materials are required for a completed application
:

  1. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)

  2. Official Medical School Transcript

  3. Three or more letters of recommendation from faculty with whom you have worked. It is strongly encouraged for you to have at least one Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) from an Emergency Medicine faculty and at least one traditional letter of recommendation from a Pediatrics faculty. This may include a Chairperson’s letter, but it is not required.

  4. USMLE scores and/or COMLEX scores:

    • Passing Step 1 score is required prior to being offered an interview and a passing Step 2 CK score is required prior to the rank list certification.

    • While COMLEX scores are accepted, USMLE scores are generally preferred.

  5. Personal Statement: It is recommended that you address your interest in combined training in your personal statement.

Away Rotation Information

If you are interested in the Combined Residency in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at LSU – New Orleans, please consider an away rotation as a 4th year medical student. This rotation provides you a flavor of both the categorical Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics Programs. It is the best way to get to know our program and for us to get to know you prior to interview season. In this 4 week rotation, you will be exposed to 2 weeks each of Emergency Medicine shifts at University Medical Center and at Children’s Hospital. During your 2 weeks at UMC, you will also gain experience with EMS and Ultrasound. Please apply through VSLO. For local students (LSU-NO or Tulane), please consider separate elective rotations in the Emergency Departments at UMC and Children’s Hospital.

Additional Education Opportunities

While rotating with each department, the resident will attend that particular department’s conferences. In addition, we will be holding a Pediatric Emergency Medicine journal club one evening a month. The purpose of this is to discuss specific Pediatric Emergency Medicine topics including but not limited to Peds-EM journal articles, AAP/ACEP policy statements, career development, residency forum. This event is typically held at the home of one of our residents or faculty and involves great New Orleans food and drink!
